![]() Casey wins on a countback! A regular top 10 finisher, Ronan Casey [11] finally hit the top spot on Wednesday, but only just. Fine margins decide big games in elite sport and this was no exception, the countback rule having to come into play to place the winner ahead of Collie Loughran [17] after both had scored 43 points. It wasn’t a great start for Ronan who was 6 over after 7 holes, but a birdie at 8 put him back in the game and he pulled out all the stops to play the last 11 holes in 2 under par for a well-deserved win. With a much better start, Collie was only 2 over after 8 and streaking ahead of the field. 10 pars on his card at the end was a good return and left him 2 shots clear of his nearest challenger for the middle section prize. The high section went to Tommy Mullen [22] who also made a super start with 3 pars in a row. He finished on 42 points with a round that included a birdie at the 12th hole. The countback rule also decided the low section winner in favour of Sean McDonagh [12] after he tied on 36 points with both Christopher Gribben [10]and Paul Fearon [10]. FEARON ENJOYS HIS DAY IN THE “LAST CHANCE SALOON” 131 hopefuls entered the final qualifying competition of the year, all vying for a place in the coveted Champion of Champions finale to the club calendar. Such was the pressure that, on a day when Warrenpoint experienced the 4 seasons in one, only 9 managed to play to their handicap or better. Step up John Fearon! Here is a seafaring man whose life was lived on some of the world’s mightiest oceans, hauling tons of fish from the turbulent waters in fierce storms and terrible conditions. A few drops of rain and a bit of wind will not deter a man of his kilter. No matter that the flags were hanging off the edges of the greens or there was no roll on the ball. His steely determination and boundless skills saw him through as he attacked the course with gusto, sailing around with 9 pars and 9 bogeys for 40 points. But we all know nothing in this life is guaranteed. There was another score of 40 points. Up and coming Marcus Woods also had an eye on the prize, and, playing off 29, he was dangerous. A birdie at the index 3 third hole demonstrated what he was capable of as he kept his head down picking up points at hole after hole. However he just could not match the stamina of the battle-hardened Fearon whose better back 9 gave him the win. So near and yet so far for Marcus, but he will learn from the experience and will come back stronger. He’ll have to, as his handicap will be cut. With 37 points, Ros Carvill [15] was just off the pace. A very steady 9 pars in his round were offset by 5 double bogeys. Still, it’s an unexpected section win and he’ll be pleasantly surprised and happy with that. The low section was also won with a low score of just 35 points by Kevin Devlin [12] and this illustrates how difficult conditions were on the day. Here was another good player, who hit birdies at 4 and 12, hitting double bogeys also. Young Sean Ryan added another gross prize to his tally this year, going round in 6 over. He hit 4 birdies but wind and rain makes it difficult and he too had double bogeys in his round. Thanks Willie |
